'Crimes of the Future': David Cronenberg Returns to His Sexy, Sticky Body-Horror Past
- 02 June 2022

A man lies sleeping in his bed, tossing and turning. Well, "bed" doesn't quite describe it: more like an organic cocoon cleaved in half, suspended from the ceiling by stringy, sinewy tentacles. The gent squirming around inside this pituitary gland-like pod is haggard but handsome, silver-maned, eyebrowless; if it weren't for the matinee-idol jawline, you almost wouldn't recognize that it's Viggo Mortensen. "I think the bed needs new software," he croaks to the female companion adjusting the rubbery extensions feeding into his hands. "It's not anticipating my pain anymore.

- 22 May 2022
- Indiewire
"Saturday Night Live's" 47th season was an interesting experiment, with the majority of hosts being first-timers. This choice led to a much-needed freshness for the sketch comedy institution, and it all wrapped up with "Russian Doll" creator and star Natasha Lyonne in that first-timer hot seat.
Host: Natasha Lyonne
Now, despite Lyonne's first-timer status as an "SNL" host, as she made clear in her opening monologue, the people at "SNL" were already her chosen family. Not only had she gone to "SNL" all the time as a New York teen, but she'd also had a long romantic relationship with Fred Armisen — which just ended last year — and was friends with people like him, Maya Rudolph, and Amy Poehler (who she'd co-created "Russian Doll" with).
And also despite Lyonne being a capital-a "Actress," it was an interesting choice that — after Armisen and Rudolph gave their Lyonne impressions,
Kate McKinnon's Alien Abductee Returns for 'Saturday Night Live' Season Finale Cold Open
- 22 May 2022
- Variety
In a sign that perhaps the departing "Saturday Night Live" stars are returning to their greatest hits as they head out the door, this week's cold open featured a wild sendoff for at least two of them. For Kate McKinnon, that meant her fan favorite alien abductee Ms. Rafferty, who once again shared a wildly inappropriate experience with Nsa officers played by Aidy Bryant and Mikey Day.
After showcasing her experience, McKinnon as Ms. Rafferty headed off into space, after one last goodbye. This clearly doubled as a McKinnon goodbye as well. "I kind of felt like an alien on this planet anyway," the character said. "Well Earth, I love you, thanks for letting me stay awhile. Live from New York, it's Saturday night!"
The clip opened with Bryant and Day, and sustained applause — clearly directed at Bryant, who is also departing after this episode.

In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children. Katy Perry on Conquering Las Vegas With a Show That Combines Pee-Wee's Playhouse With 'What Would Liza Do?'

If you're easily triggered by 30- to 40-foot props, dance routines with dozens of performers, childish wonder, juvenile humor, drug-trip simulations or just color, by all means avoid "Katy Perry: Play." "You can come totally sober and still feel high," Perry says of her phantasmagorical Resorts World Las Vegas residency, already famous for its talking face masks and poo, and dancing mushrooms, toothbrushes and tube socks.
Between the spectacle, glamour, literal bathroom humor and (not incidentally) breezy run-through of some of the indelible pop songs of the last 20 years, "Play" is a captivating, grin-inducing show that you may well wish you could mainline, repeatedly, or at least have captured in shroom form that could be put on sale in the gift shop. But, alas, its oversize pop-art pleasures can only be found in one location, so what happens in Vegas may demand a return trip to Vegas as
Dan Brennan and Ken Hahn ('Genius: Aretha' sound mixers) on being 'true to the space, but true to the song also' [Exclusive Video Interview]

- Gold Derby
"The whole team worked so hard on the project so it's really nice to get the recognition on such a music and sound-heavy project," says Dan Brennan, one of the Emmy-nominated sound mixers for National Geographic's "Genius: Aretha" starring Cynthia Erivo. Brennan shares his nomination with Emmy winners Ken Hahn and Jay Meagher. Watch Brennan and Hahn's exclusive video interview with Gold Derby above.
"Genius: Aretha" chronicles the life of Aretha Franklin from a young gospel singer in Detroit to a rising superstar who was eventually crowned the "Queen of Soul." The sound mixing team acknowledges the added pressure to bring authenticity to the screen for this icon's story. "Part of it is peoples' memories of the songs," explains Hahn. "The memories of when they heard them and what they were doing and who they were with. That changes the feeling. Where they are now being performed,

John Paragon, best known for his role as Jambi the Genie on the television series "Pee-wee's Playhouse," has died. He was 66.
Paragon died in his residence in Palm Springs, Calif. on April 3, according to a press release from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. A representative for the Sheriff's Department confirmed to Variety that Paragon's cause of death was heart disease and chronic alcohol abuse.
Born in Anchorage, Alaska on Dec. 9, 1954, Paragon got his start in show business as part of the L.A.-based improv group The Groundlings, where he worked alongside comics Paul Reubens and Phil Hartman. In 1986, Paragon reunited with Reubens on his Saturday morning children's show "Pee-wee's Playhouse," in which Paragon portrayed the teal-faced Jambi the Genie and provided the voice for Pterri. In addition to his role on the series, Paragon also wrote 24 regular season episodes and co-wrote its 1988 Christmas special with Reubens,
John Paragon Dies, Jambi on Pee-wee's Playhouse Was 66

Very sad news is coming in as it's being reported that actor John Paragon has passed away. The talented performer, who was widely known for playing Jambi the Genie on the 80s children's program Pee-wee's Playhouse, reportedly died in April, though word of his death is just starting to make the press. His passing was confirmed by the Riverside County Coroner, but a cause of death has not been revealed. Paragon was 66 years old.
Many fans of Pee-wee's Playhouse would say Jambi the Genie was just as important to the show as Pee-wee Herman. The character's bedazzled face would frequently appear in a jeweled box every time Herman wished for something, usually with a big smile behind blue makeup. Paragon also provided the voice of Pee-wee's pterodactyl pal Pterri and served as a writer and director for several episodes.
Along with Paul Reubens, Paragon co-write the hit 1988 television special Pee-wee's Playhouse Christmas Special.

In 1988, he and Reubens co-wrote "Pee-wee's Playhouse Christmas Special," which earned an Emmy nomination for Best Writing in a Children's Special.

James Corden Just Totally Ripped Off 'Pee-wee's Playhouse' (Video)
- 04 February 2021

If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'. James Corden tested out that philosophy Wednesday on "The Late Late Show," when he decided to just blatantly "steal" the "Secret Word" bit from Pee-wee Herman's (Paul Reubens) "Pee-wee's Playhouse."
Of course, the whole thing was played for laughs and not a genuine heist.
"You know what I was watching last night? I haven't watched it in so long. I was watching 'Pee-wee's Playhouse,'" Corden set the gag up. "When was the last time you watched 'Pee-wee's Playhouse? I was watching it and I thought, we should just straight-up steal — we should steal — some of their ideas. It was 30 years ago, it was on CBS — who's gonna stop us? We're not gonna get a cease & desist from 'Pee-wee's Playhouse,' and if we do, we'll just cease."

16 Rock Stars Turned Movie Composers, From Trent Reznor to Jonny Greenwood (Photos)
- 06 October 2020

John Williams is great and all, but there aren't a ton of his iconic film scores that I might actually want to listen to while working out. For that, you need to turn to the rock stars, the guys who perform to 20,000 screaming people one night and then collaborate with David Fincher the next. They make the kind of scores that raise the eyebrows of writers at Pitchfork and inspire bedroom hipsters to go out and see an indie film that might otherwise never get an audience.
Trent Reznor
The Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor burst out onto the film score scene when he composed the icy, digitized beats for David Fincher's "The Social Network" in 2010. He and his collaborator Atticus Ross won the Oscar that year, and he's since had a wave of creativity on other Fincher films like "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and "Gone Girl.

The movie, which helped turn Paul Reubens' comedic character into a household name, was a big hit in its day and paved the way for Pee-wee to become an enduring pop culture icon. In honor of the movie's anniversary, Apollonia Kotero recently shared a story about the time she attended the Purple Rain premiere with Reubens in character.
The story was revealed via the official Pee-wee Herman Twitter account. A photo featuring Apollonia Kotero, who starred alongside Prince in Purple Rain, with Paul Reubens accompanied the post. Kotero sent her congratulations on the anniversary of Pee-wee's Big Adventure with the following story, which was shared along with the photo.

Comedian Zack Fox To Debut A Wild Live Variety Show With Guest Phoebe Bridgers

Live television is electric. Even when it's bad, like your average episode of Saturday Night Live or Viceland's mostly disastrous foray into live TV, Vice Live, there's still something compelling about the chaotic, anything-can-happen energy. The spirit of a performance teetering slightly off the rails is part of what's made live streaming platforms like Twitch so interesting and popular; there's a little bit of danger baked into even the most innocuous feed.
Iheartcomix and Beats by Dr. Dre appear to be courting a bit of this danger by teaming with Twitch for a new global live stream series, Released! Hosted by Zack Fox. Rapper/comedian Fox was the lone bright spot of the before-mentioned Vice Live and teaming him with director Kitao Sakurai for an "an interactive live performance narrative adventure" described as "in the being of Blues Clues, Pee-Wee's Playhouse, Mystery Science Theatre 3000,

Despite its offbeat title that feels like it should be attached to an episode of "Pee-wee's Playhouse," "Koko-di Koko-da" is probably one of the creepiest and unsettling films that we watched in 2019. And in the new trailer, viewers will finally get a look at one of our favorites from last year's Sundance.
"Koko-di Koko-da" tells the story of a married couple that goes camping for the first time after an unfortunate tragedy derails their lives for years.

She does an about-face, joins the bathroom line like any regular schmuck, and returns with this to say: "Well, it hasn't changed. That's my book report on the bathroom at Veselka. As harrowing as ever. But

- 04 February 2020
- MovieWeb
Former child star Shaun Weiss, best known for his role as the goalie in The Mighty Ducks, has a free trip to rehab waiting for him as soon as he is released from jail. Late last month, Shaun Weiss was arrested and imprisoned on burglary and methamphetamine charges, and the story made headlines after his unrecognizable mugshot went viral. While the image led to widespread mockery when the news was shared on social media, it likewise brought about lots of support for Weiss from fans of the '90s star disheartened to see just how much he's fallen from grace.
One such person wanting to see Weiss improve his life is Lindsay Lohan's father, Michael, who might know a thing or two about seeing the life of a former child star deteriorating. After Michael reached out to a friend at the Ascend Detox and Recovery center in southeast Texas,

The Safdie brothers have been approached to helm a gritty Pee-wee Herman reboot film.
In news we weren't expecting to hear this week, or ever, Uncut Gems directors the Safdie brothers are apparently considering taking on a Pee-wee Herman reboot movie in which the beloved playhouse-botherer develops "a severe pill and alcohol addiction."
Pee-wee's Playhouse star Paul Reubens revealed the curious info in a brand-new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, in which he also discussed his frustrations with Netflix after the release of Pee-wee's Big Holiday back in 2016 - Reubens wanted to take the character in a different, darker direction, and streaming boss Ted Sarandos wasn't willing to stump up the cash. Thanks to the deaging technology the Big Holiday team used on Reubens during post-production, though, he felt that Pee-wee's options were suddenly wide open.
"I was so buoyed by that, I realized, I could do
Dark Pee-wee Herman Movie May Happen with Uncut Gems Directors
- 30 January 2020
- MovieWeb
Here's some news nobody likely expected to hear today, or ever. Paul Reubens is aggressively trying to get a dark Pee-wee Herman movie made, and when we say dark, we mean dark. Not only that, but the Safdie Brothers, who most recently directed Adam Sandler in the critically-acclaimed Uncut Gems, may end up making it. Whether or not it ends up getting made remains to be seen, but this is something Reubens is actively pursuing.
The reveal came as part of a recent profile on Paul Reubens. He was last seen as the iconic Pee-wee Herman in Pee-wee's Big Holiday, which was produced by Judd Apatow and released on Netflix. Even when that movie was being produced, Reubens was trying to convince Apatow that his dark vision for a Pee-wee movie, titled The Pee-wee Herman Story, was the way to go. Ultimately, they settled on a more family-friendly approach. Yet,
